So dad, how much do you earn?

How to run your family finances to God’s Glory ……

How we manage our family finances is always an important issue.  As Christians our lives should demonstrate different values to family money mattersthose of the world around us.  Are you teaching your kids to be financially prudent and responsible?  Do you involve them in the budgeting of your monthly family income or do you choose not to burden them with such matters?  David Murray writes a witty and enlightening article on the subject of financial openness with our kids and teaching them good stewardship of what God has given us.  http://headhearthand.org/blog/2014/01/09/so-dad-how-much-do-you-earn/

We have 2 great books on the subject of family and church finances.  In the book Family Money Matters, the author establishes biblical principles of home finance and then gives practical advice in areas such as debt, choosing a home, buying a car, insurance and pensions.Make your church's money work

The Book Make your church’s money work  helps you to achieve financial integrity in your church congregation.  The finances of a church are a concrete expression of its vision, its priorities and its commitment to doing things decently and in order.  Written in non-accountancy terminology, the author examines the basis of sound biblical stewardship as applied to the practical aspects of budgeting, reporting and control of expenses in a church. A must read by church leaders & anyone who spends any of the church’s money.

Coffee with Sylvia : Horizons of Hope by Brian H Edwards

Sylvia Bester Picture

Sylvia Bester has been part of the CBD family since August 2009 after retiring from her career in banking.  She has always loved books (the smell and feel of them). Sylvia is a Social Media junkie, passionate about people and how she can make a difference in their lives by encouraging them to read good books.

Horizons of Hope ……. Reality in Disability

With Brian Edwards arriving in South Africa tomorrow to embark on a 3 week tour of speaking engagements, it seems fitting to review one of his books.Horizons of Hope (Reprint)

Horizons of Hope is a movingly honest book about Christians who have lived through the reality of personal crisis. The book is made up of 10 individual testimonies of people who have stuggled with disabilities,  but is also brings home the fact that even through those difficulties, disabilities and illnesses, one can see that there is a sovereign plan for our lives as Christians.

Brian has had his own personal experience of  living with disability.  His wife, Barbara, struggled with ill health for 12 years and was confined to a wheel chair until her death in 1998,

Even though I was moved to tears in almost every story, I was encouraged and deeply moved by the testimonies of faith in spite of the personal struggles of the people involved, and I was totally humbled by each story.

One of those days …..

“The Gospel Project”

Gospel Project Header

When is the last time you or someone in your church said, “it’s been one of those days?”

Or maybe you are battling with how to communicate with your son or daughter the beauty of the Cross in the midst of everyday mundane life? Maybe you are a youth worker wanting to share these same great truths with your church group?Gospel Project

One of the themes in my life recently is the fact that the Gospel not only has saved me, but it sustains me in those “one of those days” days! And the prayer for my four boys is the same – that the Good News of the Gospel sustains them through new experiences – studying in a foreign town and continent; entering the pressures of matric year while at the same time looking for that “perfect” university to attend; and working through what is means to be a young man in a blended family.

So often we think of a “Gospel Project” as a short-term missions trip or an outreach activity in a local community. But the reality is that each one of us are first and foremost a “Gospel Project” in which God is encouraging us that the beauty of the Cross is sufficient enough for us to thrive and not just survive in those difficult and challenging days, weeks, months, years or even decades in some circumstances. If you have ever been on a short-term missions trip, you have probably experienced that the trip often changes the one going to a foreign land just as much as the people being ministered to in that foreign land.Gospel Project for Adults

In other words, revival always starts in the heart of each individual. Be encouraged! God’s great plan of redemption is sufficient for not only salvation but also for sanctification. At the end of each and every “one of those days,” we can agree with the apostle Paul that God’s grace has been sufficient.

Be willing to be one of God’s “Gospel Projects.” It may be painful at times, but there is purpose in our pain. Be willing to let God teach you what that purpose is in your life – it will glorify God and be of ultimate benefit in your walk with the Author of your “Gospel Project.”

If you are interested in learning more on how to be a “Gospel Project” or sharing these truths in your ministry, CBD offer a Gospel Project Resource that is available on order for pre-schoolers, kids, youth, and adults.  Please contact us for more information or click here for details of the Gospel Project www.gospelproject.com

I’m Better than You …..

The Sin of Pride & Superiority

We all know about this sin, and at some time or another in our lives have fallen short in this area –  in my case many times. Sometimes it is just a Freedom of self-forgetfulnessthought, butHumility - True Greatness (Audio)Power of Humility, The this often leads to us living and acting out what we feel.  The condescending look, the critical word, the judgemental attitude …. this is all in direct opposition to our role model, Jesus Christ, who lived a life of humility and servanthood to all.  Tim Challies sums it up well in his post “I’m Better than You”.

Moments with a Mom : Parenting Young Children

Candice

Candice is a busy wife to Matt and mom of Noah (5) and Tyler (3 going on 21).  Candice also works part-time at our Rosebank Store of Christian Book Discounters.  In her spare time Candice writes for her own blog and is a travel consultant.

People say that when you get married, you have to commit to “marrying” that person every day. I think it’s the same with motherhood. Making a decision to be a mother before you have your first born is one thing ~ but living in the throws of family life on a daily basis, I’ve had to certainly step back a couple of times and refocus my heart on my kids ~ re-commit myself to motherhood. How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & (Scrib

The wonderful thing about motherhood is that you don’t know how deep you’re in until you walk through your front door with a tiny, little human being and begin trying to piece the remnants of your life back together. Believe me, if I could’ve taken a ride forward in time and had a look at what my life would look like having a newborn, I might’ve needed a little more convincing!

You’re almost automatically hit by the fact that life as you knew it before, will never be as it was ~ and that’s crushing. Having had post natal depression with both of my kids, I can share that that valley is a dark one. I think the hardest thing is chatting to other moms who seem to have it all together and you feel like you’re struggling alone. Moms, who have their kids sleeping through WAY before mine did for example ~ I can’t understand how I got that wrong and my first born was and still is to this day, a terrible and very restless sleeper and he’s nearly 4!

As my kids get older, their lives get larger and oh boy, do they get louder. Sometimes, I feel like I live in a mosh pit of screaming, shouting, crying, juice-spilling, food-messing mayhem. There are times when I want to run to the bottom of my garden, rock myself in the foetal position and sing kumba-yah. Some people say that motherhood is the only place you experience heaven and hell at the same time. Just typing that, I feel like I’ve betrayed my kids in some way, that I’m not grateful for the amazing blessing my kids are. That’s completely untrue. It just means that it’s ok not to be ok sometimes:

  • It’s ok to feel like you’ve lost yourself in all things baby and forgotten who you are, before you had kids.
  • It’s ok to feel like life outside of your house or the baby’s room is carrying on without you and no-one knows you’re trapped in a time warp of continuous feeding, sleeping and nappy changing.Parenting Beyond Your Capacity
  • It’s ok to feel like you’re never having an uninterrupted night, working a 24 hour day shift, and HATING the fact that it feels like it’s never going to end!
  • It’s ok to have a living room that always seems to be invaded by Buzz Lightyear space ships, Barbie’s entire clothing wardrobe and shoe collection and you have to climb a Mount Everest of blocks and teddy bears just to find the couch. That’s of course assuming you have time to even sit on the couch, for longer than say, 8 seconds.
  • It’s ok to feel a sense of relief when your kids are tucked in bed (hopefully to sleep through the night, unless you’re in the same boat as I am! ) and you can sit and stare into space without anyone needing you to pour their juice, find their dummy or get them ready to bath or go to school or to their swimming lesson.
  • It’s ok to feel like all you ever do is plan your baby’s life, while yours takes the back seat. You plan the next nap time, plan the next gap you have to puree food for the next meal, plan the next shopping trip so that’s it’s in between a nap and meal. Basically, your day is dictated to by sleeping and eating patterns.

Motherhood has been my greatest blessing and at the same time, it’s been my biggest challenge. One of the greatest lessons I want to teach my kids is who they can most depend on in life, who they run to when they need comfort and who will never forsake them, no Purposeful Parentingmatter the cost. Of course, us moms fill that space without a hesitation but above us, there’s their Creator who loves them more than we can ever love them, even though that doesn’t seem possible sometimes. I want to teach my children that. But why don’t I ever take that lesson to heart and believe it when I have those “I-feel-I’m-not-coping-as-a-mom” moments? I’ve had nights when my kids were smaller, where I’ve actually called out loud to God ~ I’ve shouted at the top of my voice in the middle of the night, through tears “Jesus, I need you to help me ~ I can’t do this!”. Just admitting that I’m not ok to the One who loves me the most has brought me relief.

Vulnerability is the first step towards strength ~ as paradoxical as that may seem. I’ve realised that it’s ok not to be ok all the time. And it’s ok to admit it. I’m not a robot ~ I’m a mom.

“Being a mother is learning about strengths you didn’t know you had, and dealing with fears you didn’t know existed.” It’s 11pm, my four year old has just woken up for the second time tonight, and it looks like another long night ahead ~ bring it on, it’s game time.’

Wake Up Call

Maybe your church is just beginning to contemplate a men’s ministry. Or maybe yours has floundered after a few men’s breakfasts or sports activities attended by some guys in the church. Lifeway Publishers have just the answer: a great training church resource by Kenny Luck that will wake up ministry to a vital group in your local churches – men.

Why is it that a short term missions team of 50 currently in South Africa have only 10 males participating? Why are churches in Asia being run by primarily women? Why are sales of books worldwide bought primarily by women?

There can be no movement of God without Men of God.  Kenny Luck writes that:sleeping giant core team workbook

many pastors see the need but not a way to really engage men in their culture and church context. Deep down they know that men have not been moved toward the mission and vision of the local church on the same scale as women. Most men feel further detached from worship and left only with worldly expressions of manhood to fuel their identity.” So, in agreement with the Apostle Paul in Ephesians 5:14 regarding the men of your church, “Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

Sleeping Giant is “a punch in the gut and pat on the back for pastors and men worldwide, a biblical treatise that will bring them together and awaken serious ministry potential.” Michael W. Smith has written a great worship song, Help is on the Way. Church leaders interested in building their men’s ministry have HELP ON THE WAY! Awake your men. Check out Sleeping Giant.

Equip Book of the Month: January – The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Through Myshkin (the idiot of the story) Dostoyevsky depicts the complexity of the human soul, at the same time delivering a panoramic view of mid-19th-century Russian manners, morals and philosophy. The Idiot is one of the finest novels in history, perhaps the finest. In this novel, the enigma that is often referred to as ‘THE RUSSIAN SOUL’ is variously dissected through the different characters and more so by the hero of the story Prince Myshkin. In its simplest explanation, it is a soul with good intentions but faulty in executing the intentions. It is a soul in conflict, driven by the zest for life and a search of its meaning. Certainly the most Christian of Dostoyevsky’s novels, The Idiot portrays how disastrous a good life can be.
