TWO GREAT TITLES TO ADD TO YOUR BOOK SHELF

GOOD NEWS TO THE POOR : TIM CHESTER

Good News to the Poor (Crossway)Help them or tell them?
Be like Jesus or talk about Jesus?
Social action or gospel proclamation?

Quite often we find ourselves gravitating toward one of those modes over the other, at times going so far as to pit word against deed, as if the two were mutually exclusive. Yet Good News to the Poor shows us how both are integrated in the biblical vision of mission so that we may become both evangelists and activists? Christians who talk the talk and who walk the walk.

Collected Writings on Scripture : D.A. Caron

Collected Writings on ScriptureGod’s Word has always had enemies, but in recent years the inspiration and authority of Scripture have been attacked with renewed vigor. Respected scholar D. A. Carson has written widely on the nature of Scripture over the past thirty years, and here presents a timely collection of his work in two parts.

PART 1: Carson selects essays written on such themes as how to interpret the Bible, recent developments in the doctrine of Scripture, unity and diversity in the New Testament, and redaction criticism. Presenting a theologically balanced and confessional perspective, Carson defines the terms of a number of debates, critiques interpretive methods and theories, and suggests positive guidelines for future action.

PART 2:  Presents critical reviews of nine books dealing with the inspiration and authority of Scripture. Though substantial in content, Carson’s detailed reviews will foster careful thought and perspective in those who are relatively new to the debates surrounding biblical inspiration and authority.

Let’s be Frank: Thought for the Day

Frank Retief 2

Frank Retief was pastor at St James Church Cape Town for 31 years, having planted the church in 1968 with his wife Beulah.  He became the Presiding Bishop of the Church of England in South Africa until he retired in 2010.  Frank remains active in ministry through preaching, teaching, pastoral work & writing, and has authored a number of books.

Sustainer

Matthew 6 v 26:  Look at the birds of the air, they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, yet your Heavenly father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

Our Lord appeals to the birds of the air, the lilies of the field and also the grass of the field for one purpose. To remind us that the Creator of the world is also the sustainer. He keeps it going by meeting all its needs. Then Jesus reminds us that this great creator and sustainer is our Father and furthermore in creational terms, we are much more valuable to God than the rest of creation.  He will sustain us as well. Therefore, says Jesus, in Matthew 6 v 34 “Do not worry about tomorrow.” Of course we all know how we fail at this point, because we are given to anxiety in our fragile and precarious world. But notice Jesus does not say, do not plan for tomorrow, or work for tomorrow, or make provisions for tomorrow. All these things we should do if we can. But there will always be something about tomorrow that is not in our control.  So having done all we can about tomorrow, we should trust our Father in Heaven. “Your Heavenly Father knows that you need them” said Jesus speaking of daily necessities.  Therefore we can come in prayer with confidence and pray for our daily bread from the One who is the Sustainer of the Universe, that very one who is also our Heavenly Father.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank you for the caring words of Jesus Christ our Lord. We pray for that carefree and confident spirit that will always trust in you. Deliver us from carelessness and increase our confidence in you. Amen

Book Review: God’s not dead

Evidence for God in an Age of Uncertainty – you’ve watch the movie, now read the book.

God's Not DeadThe goal of God’s Not Dead: Evidence for God in an Age of Uncertainty is straightforward: to help readers develop a faith that is real and credible and strong enough to help others find faith in God. To that end, Rice Broocks outlines a roadmap that guides seekers to acknowledge the most basic truths of Christianity:

  • There is overwhelming and exciting evidence for God’s existence
  • The God who exists is indeed the God of the Bible
  • God has revealed his nature through his Son, Jesus Christ

As shown during the movie, this is the original book on which the main character bases much of his debate points with the atheistic professor. Persuasive arguments crafted with tools borrowed from logic, science, and philosophy, as well as scripture, solidify the faith of the Christian reader and provide starting points for discussions with sceptics. With clear, easy-to-follow explanations of key concepts and controversies, God’s Not Dead is apologetics for the twenty-first century, presented in layman’s terms. Readers will be empowered not only to talk about their own faith with confidence but to lead others to a relationship with Jesus.

Not another one …

A devotion by Trevor Bradley

Coming to work this morning there was a talk about the start of the new academic year for children, reports of load shedding and low expectations for a better year economically – hope is low and expectations are dim because of the year we had last year.  I met with someone yesterday and their cry was “ not another year like last year!”

What are we to do as Christians?  How are we to react to the ‘system’ we live in?  If I say I am different, it’s time I started living ‘the difference’.

There is a beautiful verse tucked away in Romans 15 vs 13.  Listen to it and may the Holy Spirit wash His word over our hearts, minds and spirit today.
“NOW ( not tomorrow, next week , month or year, but this day) the GOD of HOPE fill you with all JOY & PEACE in believing, that you may ABOUND in hope, by the power of the HOLY SPIRIT”.

Who doesn’t want a bit of that? HOPE … JOY … PEACE.

I want to start at the back of the verse and say that we will not know and live this divine dynamic in and through our own strength.  It has to and will only come through us coming to the Holy Spirit, admitting our powerlessness and asking Him to live His life out through us.  And the fruits of that surrender will be hope, joy and peace.

The verse hinges on 2 little words – “in believing”.  It is as I exercise faith.  Today may we know what it’s like to live out that reality through the power of Him in Us (Colossians 1 vs 27).

Book Review: Decisions, Decisions

How (and how not not) to make them.
By Dave Swavely

Decisions, DecisionsHow can I know what God wants me to do?

Life is made up of more decisions than we can count. We face so many choices every day that often lead us to anxiety or desperation. Many people stumble this way and that because they do not ground their decisions in God’s Word.

In this brief yet relentlessly biblical and yet practically insightful book, Dave Swavely first shows us how not to make decisions and then reveals what biblical decisions making is.  He covers topics such as circumstances, counsel, desires and prayer and the will of God.

should we leave our churchesA biblical response to Harold Camping.

Harold Camping, co-founder and president of the Family Radio Newwork has announced a “prophetic novelty” : He believes that the church age has come to an end.  Camping claims that God is no longer blessing local churches and that all Christians should leave their congregations.

What exactly is Camping saying?  How should Christians respond?  This book refutes the claims on this radio presenter and clearly discusses what the Bible says about the church.  Christ has not, nor will he ever, abandon his bride.

The Westminster Confession into the 21st Century, Vol. 2The Westminster Confession into the 21st Century, Vol. 3The Westminster Confession into the 21st Century, Vol. 1The Westminster Confession is a foundational document for countless churches worldwide. Churches of all sizes claim it as their confession, and hold to it with varying degrees of closeness. Its influence must not be underestimated. However, countless officeholders will have vowed to abide by the Westminster Confession with only the most perfunctory of understanding of its relevance to their situation. Ligon Duncan has assembled an impressive array of contributors from a variety of ecclesiastical backgrounds. The aim is simple – to enable the 21st Century to understand the confession more fully, and so bring about the same kind of rugged, vigorous, intelligent and self-sacrificing Christianity that was the result of its initial publication over 350 years ago.

Happy Laws

By David Murray

If man were infinitely wise, and could draw up a code for himself, which would involve no hardship, and entail all that was happy, he could devise no regulations more healthful, more profitable, or more pleasant than those of the Savior. Charles Spurgeon

I am 2For many people, the existence of the Ten Commandments is proof that God opposes human happiness. “If God really wanted me to be happy, He wouldn’t put all these laws in my way.” Thus, every day, billions of people try to throw off God’s law, cast it behind their backs, and run away from it as fast as possible. What they don’t realize is that instead of escaping hardship, they are escaping happiness.

Here are four reasons why we should trust and obey God’s laws as designed for our happiness.  read more

Book Review: The Fitting Room

 By Kelly Minter

An irresistible invitation to a spiritual makeover …

The Fitting RoomColossians 3:12 tells us to “clothe” ourselves in Christian virtues like forgiveness, joy, patience, compassion. But how does that work in real life? Can we really “dress up” in the character of Christ? Kelly Minter says the answer is yes?  If we let the Master Designer do the fitting.

Writing with warmth, humour and down-to-earth honesty, Kelly explores what it means to take off negative traits and emotional entanglements and to put on the character of Christ.  There is no guilt here, just a lot of grace, insight, warm encouragement and an invitation to a spiritual makeover.

Through scripture and story, Kelly gently shows you how to put on virtues that were truly made for you, personally tailored by the One who knows and loves you best.

God doesn’t zap away our sin.

By Tim Challies

Respectable SinsGod promises grace to battle sin and to overcome sin. We believe that God gives that kind of grace to his people. This is not something we deserve; it is not something he owes us, but he gives it anyway. It is undeserved, the overflow of his love for us.

And we long for that grace—the grace to put sin to death, the grace to bring righteousness to life, the grace to be who and what God calls us to be.

Battling UnbeliefGod gives that grace, but for some reason—his good reasons—it rarely comes in the form we would prefer. God gives it not in the form we want but in the form we need. We want God to zap away our sin, to instantly and permanently remove it. Those desires, those addictions, those idolatries—we want them to be lifted and to be gone that very moment.

God could do this. He has the strength and the power. And occasionally he does do this, he removes the sin and the temptation to sin in an instant, and it never comes back with the same strength and the same force.

But more commonly God’s grace is not manifested in the instant obliteration of a sin.  Instead, his grace is manifested in a newfound desire to destroy that sin. God does not zap away our sin, but gives us a new hatred for it and a new desire to do the hard work of battling it. He does not sovereignly remove it in a moment, but extends grace so we can battle it for a lifetime. He extends grace so we can see continuous, incremental success, knowing our weakness and crying out for his strength. He gives what we need, even if it isn’t quite what we want.

And this, too, is grace. This, too, is undeserved favor from a loving God. This, somehow, must be far better for us than the alternative. “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”  Read more…

Good News for Anxious Christians : 10 practical things you don’t have to do…

By Phillip Cary

Good News for Anxious ChristiansLike a succession of failed diet regimens, the much-touted techniques that are supposed to bring us closer to God “in our hearts” can instead make us feel anxious, frustrated, and overwhelmed.

How can we meet and know God with ongoing joy rather than experiencing the Christian life as a series of guilt-inducing disappointments? Phillip Cary explains that knowing God is a gradual, long-term process that comes through the Bible experienced in Christian community, not a to-do list designed to help us live the Christian life “right. ” This clearly written book covers ten things Christians don’t have to do to be close to God, such as:-

  • to hear God’s voice in their hearts,
  • find God’s will for their lives, and
  • believe their intuitions are the Holy Spirit.

Cary skillfully unpacks the riches of traditional Christian spirituality, bringing the real good news to Christians of all ages.
