The author of this book, Thomas Chalmers, (1780 –1847) was a Scottish minister, professor of theology, and a leader of both the Church of Scotland and of the Free Church of Scotland. He has been called “Scotland’s greatest nineteenth-century churchman.”Rev. Chalmers presents a history of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and delegated Messenger of Heaven —his life, his doctrines, and his miracles. In his development of the evidences of Christianity, he lays the main stress of his appeal upon the external, or the historical evidences. He considers the Scripture-record first of all merely as supported by the ordinary tests of historical truth. The work is divided into ten chapters: “On the Principles of Historical Evidence and their Application to the Question of the Truth of Christianity.—On the Authenticity of the different Books of the New Testament.—On the Internal Marks of Truth and Honesty to be found in the New Testament.—On the Testimony of the original Witnesses to the Truth of the Gospel Narrative.—On the Testimony of subsequent Witnesses.—Remarks on the Argument from Prophecy-Remarks on the Scepticism of Geologists. ─ On the internal Evidence, and the Objections of Deistical Infidels. ─ On the Way of proposing the Argument to Atheistical Infidels. ─ On the supreme Authority of Revelation.”
